best fishing spots are located here. Anglers from all over come here to contest in the annual fishing
competitions. The culture of fishing here started with the US novelist Zane Grey who stayed in a small fishing
hut out here. Today even US presidents come here to contest in the fishing competitions.
The world “Islamorada” is a Spanish word meaning purple isle. In the 1800s the seashores around Islamorada
where home to a type of fluorescent algae that gave of a purple hue at night. It’s rare to see any of that
fluorescent stuff these days, but the name has stayed on.
Islamorada suffered a direct hit by the infamous Labour Day hurricane of 1935 which destroyed the railway
bridge that was in existence back then. Today the spot is marked by a memorial and the ashes of the 300
persons who died in that hurricane. The 65-foot by 20-foot art deco–style Hurricane Monument,

Indian Key
From Islamorada you can kayak out to the historic Indian Key State Park. You can hire a Kayak from Robbie’s
marina and paddle out past the pier, under the bridge and out towards Indian Key. It’s just a short 30 minute
paddle.
Before the Seminole Indian wars there were two stores at Indian Key and quite a successfully community that
seemed to give Key West a lot of competition. The island had a deep harbor and so the wrecking captains and
Indians who lived here were regular customers of the stores.
During the Seminole Indian wars the island was attacked by the Indians and everything was burned to the
ground. The remains of that settlement are still visible today and perhaps that is why the area is now designated
a State Park.
